It takes courage to open your heart, and nothing comes with more risks – or more rewards. Whoever you are and whatever stage your life is at, love makes it matter.

Real love isn’t like it is in the movies – it’s bigger and better than that. The highs and lows, the joy and pain, the risks and rewards, it’s all there. The photographer Sophie Hemels is inspired by love, and for this photo essay for Wrangler, she shot and interviewed three couples from Amsterdam and Antwerp. “I want to show the beauty of real people with a real story,” she says. No lighting, no styling – just authentic true love.

After matching on a dating app in, Levi and Jan’s first date was a winter walk at sunset.

Shahrnaz, a photographer, and David, a design consultant and conceptual artist, met in Chicago in October 2015, and have a daughter.

Nick, a photographer, and Nikol, a model and computer graphics artist, met on a photoshoot in Moscow in 2014, and their love story began on Valentine’s Day the following year.
